How to get to Crans-Montana

Train, car, plane, SMC funicular: all the options to reach Crans-Montana, with travel times and tips for each season.

  • transport
  • practical guide

It’s one of the first questions you ask when planning a stay: how do you actually get there? Crans-Montana is a mountain resort, but it’s very well served — a direct train to Sierre, a funicular that climbs from there, a motorway running to the foot of the plateau, and three international airports within reasonable reach. Here’s a practical guide to help you choose the right mode of transport depending on where you’re coming from and the season.

Where Crans-Montana is

Crans-Montana is a resort in the canton of Valais, in French-speaking Switzerland, perched on a sunny plateau at around 1,500 metres altitude. It overlooks the town of Sierre, sitting roughly 1,000 metres lower in the Rhône valley. That difference in altitude is what gives the resort its dry, sunny climate (~300 days of sun a year) and its panoramic views over the Valais Alps.

The resort lies halfway between Sion (the cantonal capital, ~30 km to the west) and Brig (~50 km to the east), on the main axis that runs through Valais.

By car

Road access is straightforward: the A9 motorway runs the length of the Rhône valley, then you take the Sierre exit and follow a winding mountain road up to the resort. The road from Sierre is about twenty kilometres long and climbs roughly 1,000 metres in elevation — count on 25 to 30 minutes at a steady pace.

From France (Geneva)

From Geneva, take the A1 motorway then the A9 towards Lausanne / Sion / Brig. Exit at Sierre. Allow around 2 h 15 to 2 h 30 from Geneva airport depending on traffic. This is the route most commonly used by French travellers.

If you’re coming from Lyon or Annecy, you’ll pass through Geneva as well and follow the same itinerary.

From Zurich

From Zurich, you have two options:

  • Via Bern and Lausanne: A1 then A9 motorway. Allow around 3 h.
  • Via the Lötschberg tunnel (car-carrying train): a possible shortcut through Kandersteg, with the rail tunnel ferrying cars to Goppenstein, then onward by road to Sierre. It can save time depending on conditions, but it’s a paid service worth checking in advance.

From Italy (Milan)

From Milan or the Italian lakes, you cross via the Simplon road tunnel or the Simplon pass in summer. Once on the Swiss side at Brig, take the A9 westward to Sierre. Allow around 2 h 30 to 3 h from Milan.

By train

Switzerland is famous for its rail network, and the train is a genuinely good option for reaching Crans-Montana, especially if you don’t need a car on site.

The journey

  • Arrival station: Sierre / Siders, on the main Geneva–Lausanne–Brig line operated by SBB/CFF.
  • From Geneva airport: direct train or one change at Lausanne, allow around 2 h to Sierre.
  • From Zurich airport: direct train or one change at Bern, allow around 2 h 30 to 3 h.
  • From Milan: direct Trenitalia / Eurocity trains run through the Simplon and stop at Brig, with a connection on to Sierre. Allow around 3 h 30 to 4 h.

Once at Sierre, you have two options to get up to the resort: the SMC funicular, or the PostBus.

SMC funicular

The SMC funicular (Sierre-Montana-Crans) is a local institution. It leaves from Sierre station, climbs directly up to Crans-Montana, and the journey takes a little under fifteen minutes. It’s quick, scenic, and very practical with luggage.

A combined train + SMC ticket is available from any Swiss station, which makes things simpler. Check smc.ch for up-to-date timetables and fares.

PostBus

If you prefer the road, PostBus coaches also run between Sierre and Crans-Montana several times a day. The journey takes a little longer than the funicular (winding road) but lets you take in the scenery.

By plane

Three airports are worth considering, ranked from closest to most international.

Sion (SIR)

The closest of the three: just ~30 km away, around 40 minutes by car. But it’s a small regional airport with very few commercial flights (mostly seasonal and private). Handy if you have a flight landing there, but don’t rely on it as your main option.

Geneva (GVA)

The most-used international airport for travellers heading to Crans-Montana. Around 2 h by car or train. Flights from across Europe, plus a handful of long-haul routes. Most French, British, Italian and North American travellers arrive via Geneva.

Zurich (ZRH)

Around 3 h by car or train. Switzerland’s largest airport, and the preferred hub if you’re arriving from Asia, Germany or Eastern Europe. The direct train from Zurich airport to Sierre is comfortable and lets you work on the way.

The SMC funicular in detail

The SMC is more than just a means of transport: it’s part of the arrival experience at Crans-Montana. A few practical points:

  • Route: Sierre (SBB/CFF station, at the bottom) up to Crans-Montana, with possible intermediate stops.
  • Duration: around 15 minutes.
  • Frequency: regular throughout the day (check exact timetables on smc.ch — they vary by season and day of the week).
  • Combined ticket: you can buy a train + funicular ticket from any SBB/CFF station.
  • Luggage: allowed, but arrive a few minutes early if you’re carrying a lot of gear (skis, snowboard, suitcases).

It’s the ideal option if you’re arriving without a car, or if you want to avoid the winding road in winter.

Once you’re there: do you need a car?

Good news: a car isn’t essential in the resort itself. Crans-Montana runs free shuttles year-round between its different quarters (Crans, Montana, Aminona, Plans-Mayens). The resort is compact — about 4 km from east to west — and plenty of things can be done on foot.

That said, a car becomes useful if:

  • You want to explore the surrounding villages (Lens, Chermignon, Icogne, or head down into the valley to Sierre, Sion, Martigny).
  • You’re planning longer excursions (Lake Geneva, Val d’Anniviers, Zermatt from Täsch, Verbier).
  • You’re travelling as a family with lots of gear and prefer the independence.

For a short stay focused on the resort itself (skiing, restaurants, walks, golf), arriving by train + funicular and using the free shuttles on site is perfectly workable.

Winter-specific tips

In winter, the mountain road between Sierre and Crans-Montana calls for a few precautions:

  • Winter tyres (or all-season tyres marked M+S): effectively required on the road up to the resort, and strongly recommended under Swiss law. In the event of an accident without suitable equipment, your insurance may refuse to cover you.
  • Snow chains: worth keeping in the boot, especially during heavy snowfall. On certain stretches they can become temporarily mandatory.
  • Check road conditions: have a look at tcs.ch or local sources before setting off, particularly if a storm is forecast.
  • Prefer train + funicular if you’re not comfortable on snowy roads — it’s by far the more relaxed option in the depths of winter.
  • Allow extra time: a 25-minute drive can easily turn into an hour with fresh snow and heavy traffic (Saturday changeover days in particular).

Summer-specific tips

In summer, things are much simpler:

  • A car isn’t essential: if you arrive by train, the SMC funicular is more than enough, and on site the shuttles and walking cover most needs.
  • Ideal to combine: many travellers take the train to Sierre and hire a car locally just for a few targeted excursions (Val d’Anniviers, mountain lakes, vineyards).
  • Bikes and mountain bikes: trains accept bikes with a bike ticket — handy for keen riders.
  • Walks on foot: the resort is surrounded by hiking trails. Many walks start directly from your accommodation, with no need to move the car.

In summary

  • Fastest from France: by car from Geneva (~2 h 15).
  • Most relaxed: SBB/CFF train to Sierre + SMC funicular (ideal without excessive luggage).
  • The international option: fly into Geneva (GVA) or Zurich (ZRH), then continue by train or car.
  • On site: free shuttles, a compact resort, and a car mostly useful for excursions outside the resort.
  • In winter: winter tyres are essential, snow chains are recommended, or take the train for peace of mind.
